Tetrapol Publicly AvailableSpecifications has detailed information and an overviewpicture.
History
Matra/EADS developed TETRAPOL and delivered anoperational digital trunked radio system at an early date. Among the firstusers was the French Gendarmerie Nationale in 1988 forits RUBIS system.
TETRAPOL currently has 80 networks deployed in 34 countries andclaims 70% of the European Digital public mobile radio (PMR) market.
Migration of country-wide analogue PMR networks to digital onescan be slowed down due to budget controversies. In the example ofSwitzerland, after 10 years only 5 of 24 cantons use the TETRAPOLnetwork. Due to technology problems and high costs the remainingcantons are very reluctant to invest. A similar discussion tookplace in Germany with regard to TETRA introduction.
EADS (Connexity) and Siemens (S-PRO) are among the majormanufacturers of professional radio systems based on the TETRAPOLspecification.
Alternative Solutions
TETRA isstandardized by ETSI. TETRA is a more recent standard thanTetrapol.
P25 is theworlds most deployed digital PMR standard, with the majority ofnetworks located in North America. Over recent years networks havenow been installed in South and Central America, Asia, Europe,Middle East, Oceania and Africa. P25 is TelecommunicationsIndustry Association (TIA) open standard.
